TUIMELAAR OF  Kleptuimelaar 
Als een klep niet rechtstreeks (met alleen een klepstoter tussen de nok van de nokkenas en de klep) door de nokkenas wordt bediend, gebeurt dit via een kleptuimelaar.
Een kleptuimelaar is te vergelijken met een wip, die in het midden scharnierend in de cilinderkop is bevestigd. Hij keert een omhooggaande beweging om in een omlaaggaande beweging (en omgekeerd). De klep gaat dus open, als de nok van de nokkenas omhoog wijst.
